Fixing Drips and Leaks
This one is quite obvious since we all hear about how we need to fix any leaky plumbing in order to conserve unnecessarily wasted water. Nonetheless, here are a few easy ways you can go about fixing any household leaks:
Check your water meter during a two hour period during which your house is not using any water. If it changes, you have a leak somewhere.
To find the leak, check your toilets by placing a drop of food coloring in the tank. If after a few hours there is color in the bowl, that toilet is leaking and you should change its flapper.
To check faucets, you can either watch them to see if they periodically drip or you can stop the drain and see if any water accumulates. If this is the case, you can use this opportunity to exchange your faucet for a WaterSense faucet or you can check out this playlist on how to fix various faucets.
Checking for leaking showerheads involves the same procedures as checking your faucets. If your showerhead is leaking, you can exchange it for a WaterSense showerhead or reference this video to fix your existing showerhead.
For people with irrigation systems, an irrigation system leak can cause massive and unintentional water consumption. Unfortunately, though, there is no DIY fix for such leaks and you have to hire a professional to assess the issue and fix it for you. You can reference this guide on choosing the right professional for your needs.
